My name is Jeff Gernbacher. I live in Minnesota and this is a little about who I am.
I have two boys who are the center of my being, inspire me to enjoy life, and are my drive to continue to grow. Focus on today while being mindful of the future are the words that guide my life, actions, and decisions by. Overall, I typically take an analytical and operational approach to things, but while these can be cold and clinical words, they create very strong bond with emotions, relationships, and connections. Creating harmony between the logical and emotional can create some of the most magical moments life has to offer.
Life is about experience, trust, and emotion. Color and sound are two concepts that truly create and evoke emotion. They are also something that I have worked with, studied, and enjoyed throughout my life both personally and professionally. My professional experience with these concepts has always been from a mechanical and analytical perspective. This has ranged from understanding, enabling, and experiencing the technology behind and relationship between resolution, color, depth, layering, and accuracy when working with color and images. My focus when working with sound has been about evaluating sound quality, balance, clarity, accuracy, range, power, and harmony. For example, I was one of the original pioneers who brought color and image accuracy beyond elite home theaters to the broader population through Imaging Science Foundation (ISF) calibrations. This was the perfect professional combination of art and science that I have ever experienced. After spending thousands of hours analyzing, adjusting, and focusing on achieving appropriate CIE 1931 colorimetry and staring at the impacts of a D65 and evaluating SMPTE color bars, I developed a love for and deep understanding of the relationship between colors, the impact that color can have, and how the human brain and eyes perceive and process color.
But without sound, the true emotional impact of color can’t reach its full potential. Not necessarily words or songs, but sound; frequency, tone, clarity, and rhythm. When looking at or creating something, the colors, frequency, and rhythm creates emotion which can hopefully be at least partially captured on canvas. When this magical combination of factors comes together it creates a story that will hopefully live on far longer than the time we have here on Earth.
I have always loved the idea and concept of creation. Taking random chaos and unrelated things and combining them to create harmony or conflict depending on the inspiration. Personally, looking at art and creation from a rational and analytical perspective used to be an impassible barrier to try my own hand at creation. As an artist my goal is to captivate the viewer through curiosity, emotion, and intrigue. I strive to create something that is appreciated from a quick glance but becomes exponentially more interesting the closer you look. I enjoy the process; from ideating, to planning and mixing, to testing, the exciting/nerve wracking point-of-no-return, and then evolving with the piece to create something amazing. I look forward to continuing learning, growing, and creating.
There is no end, just constant evolution.
